Accio adventure lettering on a wrist over a map

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A hand rests on a printed map of India and Sri Lanka, with the inner wrist and forearm in sharp focus. The black ink lettering reads accio adventure in a typewriter-style serif, running up the forearm at a slight angle. The image is shot close up with a soft vignette, and the warm tones of the map contrast with the black ink.

This morning I tried the charm on the immigration clerk. I said it under my breath, the way you taught me on the back step when we were nine and wanted the cat to come in. Accio, stamp. The boat leaves at six tomorrow, if the boatman's cousin still wants the cash. I have the map open on the bed, the warm paper of India going soft at the edges from handling, and I have been tracing the gap to Sri Lanka with my finger for an hour, like a child who thinks the distance will shrink if she is patient enough.

Tell Dad the kettle is not his to guard any more. Tell the cat to wait. And if the crossing goes wrong, I will summon something better, probably a rickshaw. Love, Nell.
