World map tattoo with red hearts on forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A forearm shows a black outline tattoo of the world map, with the Americas, Africa, Europe and Asia drawn in thin, even linework. Small solid red hearts mark several locations, including the Americas, Africa and Australia. The hand is raised with the index finger pointing right, wearing several rings and a stack of gold bangles, against a softly out-of-focus world map backdrop.

Dear Ines, the ferry from Tangier was full of men arguing about football and a goat that had clearly paid for its ticket, so I stood at the rail with my pencil and drew the coast of Morocco as it slid away. You will laugh, but I kept losing the shape of Africa at the bottom of the page and having to start the whole thing over. Your father always said I drew maps like a man trying to remember a name. Maybe he was right.

I am writing this from a room above a bakery in Lisbon where the owner's grandson keeps asking me to point to where I live. I point to the kitchen table in Leeds every time, which he finds suspicious. Yesterday I put a red dot on the paper for each place I have slept more than three nights, and there are only four, which is shameful for someone with my boots. The one near Cape Town is the biggest. I may have been wrong to make it a heart. My pen slipped, and then I liked it.
The bangles you gave me rattle every time I gesture, so Lisbon has been learning my hands before my voice. I am sending you a photograph of this map I have pinned above the bed, the one with the sea faded to cream. Look at the corner where Australia is. I have marked it too, though I have never been there. Keep the spare key under the blue pot. I will be home when the swallows leave, and if you still have the old atlas, bring it to the station. We can argue about where the edges are.
