Purple line-drawn outline of a plane seen from the front, inside a dashed circle, on the inside of a forearm.

Aeroplane outline on a forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A forearm shows a single-colour purple outline tattoo of an aeroplane viewed head on, with a fuselage, swept wings and small engine or window details. A dashed circle sits behind the aircraft, and the linework is clean and even with no shading. The plain skin and dark chair in the background keep the focus on the design.

The aeroplane came down on the Ouse the week the ice went out, nose first, like a heron that had changed its mind. Dad had the Patience tied up at Boothferry and saw it go in from the wheelhouse, and by the time I got my boots on he was already in the skiff, rowing hard against the brown current with his jaw set.

It was a small single-engined thing, the wings held up by wire, and the water had got into the cockpit and turned everything to mud. We fished it out in pieces over three days. I found a tin of pear drops wedged under the seat, the paper gone soft but the sweets still in their twists, and a folded map with a ring drawn in pencil around the village of Ousefleet. He had been circling it. You could see on the map where he had gone round and round, looking for a field that was not there, until the engine quit.

Dad wanted the metal sold at Goole, and the scrap man offered four pounds for the lot. I said nothing and kept the map. When the barge was loaded and the tow lines were coiled, I stood on the stern and watched the river close over the last bent strut, and the rings it made spread out wide and then faded, one inside another, until the water was flat again and the sun lay across it like a sheet pulled straight.
