Golden spiral tattoo on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a golden spiral drawn in thin black linework, set inside nested rectangles that are also outlined in fine black lines. Soft blue and red watercolour-style splashes sit around the edges of the rectangles and along the curve of the spiral. The design is centred on the inner forearm, photographed straight on with a plain background behind it.

Dorota had measured the arch four times before the florist arrived, and each time the numbers came out the same: the long side of the large rectangle was one and a half times the short, and the square she cut from its corner matched the doorframe her grandfather had hung in Gdansk. Her apprentice, Kofi, thought it was showing off. "Nobody counts the curve, Dor," he said, sweeping sawdust toward the van. "They count the drinks."

The timber was ash, pale as cream, and she had planned to leave it bare. On the Thursday before the wedding, Mrs Ashworth knocked a tin of blue milk paint off the bench, and the red barn stain followed it onto the floor. By the time Dorota had mopped the lot, there were two stains on the spare panel: a cloud of cornflower and a spatter like rowan berries. She was going to bin it. Instead she held it against the spiral she'd pencilled on the wall and saw where the colours wanted to sit.

So the arch went up on Saturday with its bones showing in fine black lines. The spiral tightened where the couple would stand, and the blue bled out around the edges as if the sky had been let in through the joints. The bride's aunt said it looked like a painting of weather.

Dorota stood at the back with a glass of cheap prosecco and watched the two of them step into the curl of the wood. She had always thought proportion was a kind of rule, but it only held, she decided, if you let a little accident sit inside it.
