Alice and the Cheshire Cat on an upper arm
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large tattoo covers the outer upper arm, showing a cartoon-style Alice resting her chin on her hand beside the grinning Cheshire Cat. Soft grey shading and smoky leaf or foliage forms fill the background around the figures. The piece is entirely in black and grey ink, and the composition is framed by the curve of the arm against a plain white top.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Wrexley Junction's lost property cupboard held three hundred and eleven umbrellas, a tuba, and a cardboard box marked CAT in somebody's careful capitals. I was the one who signed things in on Tuesday evenings, when the 19:40 to Crewe had gone and the platform lamps buzzed like wasps.

The box had come in on the Friday train with no owner. Inside was a grey tin of pencils, a blue ribbon, and a small brass key tied to a luggage label reading 'for the garden door, if it is still there.' I hung the key on the hook by the kettle and forgot it until a woman in a yellow mac came to the hatch asking after a rabbit-shaped umbrella. She had no rabbit. She had a list of things she'd left on this line over twenty years, and she wanted to know whether the ribbon was hers.
I said it was hers if she could tell me the colour of the pencils. She thought for a moment, then said, 'Dormouse grey, and they never sharpen right,' and laughed the way people do when they've been wrong for a long time and are glad of it. She had been travelling, she said, in the way some people keep returning to a stop they can't quite leave.
I gave her the key. She turned it over, looked at me with a grin that seemed to have decided where I was going before I had, and said the garden door was at the far end of Platform Four, where the lamps never reached. When she walked off, the lamp above the hatch flickered once. The 19:40 came back in, empty, and nobody got off.
