Black and grey blackwork tattoo of a flowing wave and scrolling swirls across the shoulder and upper back.

Flowing black wave swirl on the shoulder

Blackwork · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A large flowing design rises from the bottom left of the frame and curls upwards across the shoulder. Bold black solid areas form the main wave and scrolls, with fine grey shading and lighter cut-out highlights in the crest and base. The composition is tall and narrow, following the curve of the shoulder, and the background skin is warm and softly lit.

The swell came up under the stern at four bells in the middle watch, and Teodor, who had been at sea longer than the ship had been afloat, put down his mug without a word. That was how I knew it was serious. I went out onto the bridge wing with the wind pulling at my oilskin and watched the black water stand up beside us, higher than the rail, its crest curling over on itself like the end of a scroll someone had written in a hurry. Where the wheelhouse light touched it, the foam went grey and then white, and the broken edges hung there in lace before they fell.

The Hesketh Bay lifted her bow to it the way a tired horse lifts its head. For a long moment we hung on the slope with the whole sea behind us, and then the wave passed under and went on toward Valparaiso without us, leaving only a hiss along the hull and a smell of salt and diesel. Nobody on deck spoke. Somewhere below, a tin of peaches rolled from one side of the galley to the other and back again.

Later, when the watch changed, Teodor sat with me in the galley and opened the back of the logbook. Inside, pressed flat between the pages, was a drawing in pencil: thirty years of waves, each one a different shape, none of them the same as the one we had just seen. He tapped the margin. A wave, he said, is only water that has decided, for a few seconds, to be a shape. The rest of the time it is just weight.

By dawn the sea had gone flat and oily. On the wet steel of the rail there was a thin curl of salt, drying in the first light, and I left it there while I wrote in the log: moderate swell, no damage, all hands accounted for.
