Alien and flying saucer back piece
Back · Colour · Photo
A full back piece shows a crowd of small green aliens in the foreground, with a taller grey horned alien standing above them. Behind them sit a glowing flying saucer, more saucers in an orange sky, and rocky mountains with trees. The shading is painterly and airbrush-like, with smooth gradients, and the colours are mostly oranges, greens and yellows with grey stone tones.

The last train had gone up the valley at ten to six, which left me, the stationmaster of Glenrannoch Halt, the kettle, and a sky the colour of marmalade that had been on fire since teatime. Then smoke rolled off the far ridge, grey and slow, and the first saucer slid out from behind it like a dinner plate someone had polished.

They came down the cutting on foot, four of them at first, then nine, small and green and polite as bank clerks. The tallest walked at the back with his horns held high, as if he had been expecting a delay. He asked in a voice like a ticket machine clearing its throat whether the service to the coast still ran on Sundays. I told him it did, on alternate weeks, and that a single was cheaper than he'd think.
I sold them nine singles from the old Edmondson tin, stamping each with the date, which was the only ink I had. They sat along the bench with their knees up and watched the mountains darken, passing my flask from hand to hand as though it were medicine. Nobody spoke for a long time. The saucer hummed on the siding like a fridge left open in the next room.
When the signal lamp finally went out, the tallest one came to the window and tapped a ticket twice on the glass. 'Return,' he said, and pointed past the ridge where the sunset was still burning. I looked at the printed date and saw it was already the next day. I punched the card anyway, though there was nothing to punch it for, and watched them rise over the trees like sparks going the wrong way up a chimney.
