Horror collage across a full back

Realism · Back · Mixed · Photo

A large back piece combines several horror imagery elements: a clown face at upper right, a snarling dog and a man's face at left, a red-roofed hotel in the centre, a cat and a spider lower down, and a wooden sign reading Pet Sematary. The work is rendered in realistic shading with detailed greys for the landscape and smoke, and bold colour in the faces, hair and sky-like areas. The composition fills the whole back, with the figures stacked around a central scene.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ground behind the Hollis barn had frozen hard enough to ring under the spade, and you dug anyway, because the cat had been stiff on the back step since dawn and your mother would not have her going in the bin. The sign you nailed to the gatepost last spring leaned a little further each week. PET SEMATARY, it read, the letters burned in with a hot iron, and beneath it, smaller, a rule nobody had asked for: Mind the lane after dark.

From the ridge above the yard you could see the old guest house, its red roof furred with snow, one window lit though the Pruitts had been gone ten years. Smoke leaned out of its chimney in a long grey rope that did not drift the way smoke should. Down at the ford, a car sat nose-first in the ditch with its engine silent and its headlamps still burning, and a man in a ruff and a painted white face was crouched on the running board, tying balloons to the wing mirror one by one.

Bartholomew, the bloodhound, had gone rigid by the wall. His lip peeled back over his teeth and a low sound came out of him that you had never heard from a dog before. You did not look toward the lane. You kept digging, down past the frost, until the spade struck the wrapped bundle and the shape inside it shifted, and a small weight settled onto your boots.

It was the cat, grey-eyed and perfectly calm, sitting on your toes as if she had only come out to see what you were doing. Behind you the gate rattled on its hinge. When you finally turned round, the sign was facing the other way, and the lane was full of footprints that stopped at your back door.
