Black and grey flash design of an all-seeing eye in a triangle above a skull, crossed bones, a candle and a twin-headed eagle, framed by scrollwork on a sunburst background.

All-seeing eye and eagle skull design

Traditional · Black and grey · Flash

A detailed ink drawing of an ornate emblem with an eye within a triangle at the top, crossed bones above a candle, and a twin-headed eagle holding a skull, laurel branch and arrows. The linework is fine and precise, with stippled dots and hatched shading across the feathers, scrolls and background rays. The palette is limited to greys and black over a warm brown wash, and the symmetrical composition sits centred on a sunburst.

The lift at St Aldred's had a painted triangle above its doors, with an eye in the middle of it, and Sister Pryce swore the Victorians put it there to keep the porters honest. I had been on nights for six weeks before I stopped checking it when I passed.

It was the storm that took the power out on Ward Seven, the way storms do in February, all at once and with no apology. Pryce came down the corridor with a church candle in a brass holder, its flame bending every time a door slammed somewhere above us. She handed it to me without a word and went off to find the torches. The crossed bones on the cupboard door, the ones that meant the drugs were locked inside, caught the light and seemed to lean closer.

Bed four rang its bell. Mr Hollis, who had not spoken since Tuesday, was sitting up with his hands flat on the blanket, looking past me at the window. "Who's counting?" he said. I told him nobody was counting, it was only the night staff. He shook his head slowly. "Someone always is. Up there." He nodded at the ceiling and the old lamp fitting, as if the eye were stitched into the plaster above us.

So I sat on the chair beside him with the candle between us, and we watched the window together until the sky went grey over the car park. Neither of us said much more. When the lights came back at six, buzzing and blameless, he was asleep, and I was still holding the candle, its wax gone soft in my palm.
