Owl and sugar skull design
Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows a symmetrical owl with wide eyes and layered feathers, with a sugar skull forming its chest and face. Small flowers and a diamond shape sit in the skull's eye sockets and around the design. The linework is bold with fine stippled shading in the feathers and skull, set on a pale paper-toned background.

The owl came up Hollin Gap the same week as the first snow, and my mother said that was no coincidence. She kept the toll hut there for forty years and believed birds carried word between the living and the ones the mist had taken. I believed the owl wanted the crusts I left on the sill.

Every November she painted flowers into the eye holes of the skull her father had carved above the door, the way the valley women dressed their dead for the feast. The owl sat beneath it on the lintel, wings folded down like a cloak, staring at the road with eyes wider than any lamp we owned. She said it never blinked when someone was lost.
On the third night of sleet a carter came stumbling out of the white, cursing his mules and asking for Crane's Ford. My mother gave him broth and said nothing of the ford, which had been under water since his brother drowned there. At first light the owl dropped a cut-glass stone at his boots, faceted like a diamond and dull with age. He turned it over in his palm and went very quiet.
He took the stone and walked down the pass without a word, and the owl lifted after him into the grey. When I looked up at the lintel, one of my mother's painted flowers had been pecked clean away, and the skull grinned on in the cold.
