All-seeing eye in geometric circles on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single eye sits inside an upright triangle at the centre of a geometric design of overlapping circles, arcs and straight lines extending outwards. The linework is fine and precise, with stippled dotwork shading in the circles and around the triangle. The tattoo is shown in black and grey on a forearm, against a busy black and white patterned fabric in the background.

Dear Nell,

The drawing came out true in the end, though it cost me three nights at the board and most of a bottle of Mr Cole's ink. Every circle had to agree with the others, and every straight line had to run out from the centre and stop exactly at the paper's edge, the way Father taught us to rule a boundary. I measured the sheet twice before I trusted my own hand, because he always said a compass lies when you are tired and the paper never does.

The eye went in last, a single open lid inside an upright triangle, with dots worked thick around it so it would show in lamplight. Mrs Ashdown wanted it on the seal for the Hartsholme wedding, so the invitations would carry it, and I told her a chapel plan needed no decoration. She said a plan was only a promise written small, and she would have her eye.

On the morning of the service the printer, young Pryce, pressed the seal onto every card, and the ink took so cleanly that the lines seemed to climb off the paper. Ada came down the aisle with the sun behind her and stopped to look at the card in my hand. She laughed and said the eye was not watching them at all. It was only where all the lines from the circles met, so anyone standing at the centre would know exactly where they were.

I have kept the spare sheet for you. Tell Mother the marks are sound and the chapel stands square.

Your brother, Tom
