Overlapping circles and triangle on upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a cluster of thin overlapping circles of varying sizes, with small solid dots, dotted arcs and straight construction-style lines extending upward to a small triangle at the top. The linework is fine and even, with heavier strokes on a few of the larger circles, and the design is rendered entirely in black ink with no shading or colour. It is centred on the inner upper arm and photographed in greyscale against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Come in under the awning, all of you, the rain has no respect for anybody's shoes. Stand where the drips won't find your collar. Now, this is the tale of Ada Quill, who measured the market square before there was a market, with a length of rope, a brass sighting triangle and a pocketful of pebbles.

She pegged the rope at the old well and walked it out in rings. Every ring was a day's work. Where the rings ran into each other she dropped a pebble, so the ground grew dotted with them like the spots on a trout. The stallholders laughed. What's the use of a map of puddles? they asked her. Ada only kept walking, and the rain kept falling, and the pebbles kept count.

Then came the winter the well went dry. The town was sure it had been cursed. Ada climbed the chapel roof with her triangle held to one eye, lined its peak up with the dotted arc of the road, and found the spot where water was running underneath, a full hand's depth below the cobbles. She had drawn the way to it a year before without knowing.

So when you come to buy your bread on a Saturday, look down. The stones still sit where she dropped them, and the water still answers when you ask it kindly. Mind the third step, it's slick.
