Anatomical heart with moth in triangles
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A pen drawing on paper shows an anatomical heart with its vessels at the top, overlaid by a large upright triangle and a smaller inverted triangle. A moth with outspread wings sits across the lower chamber, and thin lines of veins run through the heart. The heart is built from fine hatching and stippled shading in black ink on a plain off-white background, and the composition is centred and symmetrical.

Dear Maureen, the moth came back again tonight, the big brown one that keeps finding the strip light on Ward Nine. Sister Okafor says it means rain, which is what she says about anything that flies. I've been sitting at the desk between the two o'clock obs and the four o'clock bloods, drawing in the margins of the handover sheet because my hands won't keep still otherwise.

I drew the heart first, the way Dad taught us to draw an engine, from the outside in, every pipe where it ought to be. Then I put the triangles over it, one standing up and one upside down, because the pair of them looked like a door that opens two ways. The moth arrived while I was doing the veins. It settled on the lower chamber and stayed there with its wings spread flat, as if someone had pinned it for the stocktake.
Mr Hallam in bay three rang his bell at half four. He wanted to know if the moth was a death's head. I told him it was more of a cousin, and he laughed so hard his drip alarm went off. Afterwards I tore the sheet off and folded it into my pocket, meaning to bin it, but I keep taking it out to look.
Tomorrow I'll pin it to the corkboard by the kettle, where the day staff will see it before they start. Nobody will know whose hand it is, and that suits me fine. The moth is still on the lamp, if you're wondering. Love, Jo.
