Black linework drawing of a heart made of faceted geometric polygons with shaded facets, in a geometric style, shown as a design with no body placement.

Geometric anatomical heart drawing

Geometric · Black and grey · Flash

A hand-drawn design of a human heart built from angular, faceted polygons, with the great vessels rising from the top. Fine black ink lines outline each facet, with light grey shading on selected planes to suggest depth. The image is black and grey on a pale background, centred and shown on its own without any body part.

You are sent up the ladder on a Tuesday, when the rain has finally found the crack in the chapter house window. Brother Osric hands you the glazier's knife and a coil of lead came, and says nothing about the drawing pinned to the bench beside it. It is an old sheet, the ink gone brown at the edges: a heart drawn as a cage of angles, every chamber broken into planes, the great vessels rising from its top like bare branches in January.

Osric had been the house's glazier for forty years and, you are told, had never cut a straight line for the sake of it. Every pane he left behind is faceted. When you lift the shattered blue of Saint Benedict's sleeve out of its leading, the pieces fall into triangles that refuse to match, and you spend the whole afternoon turning them over like a child with a puzzle of stars, trying to find which angle belongs against which.

By vespers your fingers are grey with lead dust and you have a sheet of new glass cut to a shape no saint ever wore. You lay it against the gap. It almost fits, but a sliver of old light remains at the lower edge, a single diamond of clear evening falling through onto the flagstones.

Osric comes to look and says only that it will do. You leave the diamond unpainted, as he would have. Below, the bell begins for compline, and the light moves across the floor by the width of one pane, which is all any window in this house has ever asked of anyone.
