Anchor, ship wheel and compass on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo of an anchor with a ship's wheel behind a compass rose at its centre, set on the inner forearm. The linework is bold and the shading gives the metal parts depth and a slight three-dimensional look. A paper stencil of the same design sits to the right of the arm against a dark background.

The night sister on Ward Seven kept a brass compass in the pocket of her cardigan, though nobody on the ward had ever seen her take it out. The corridors at three in the morning all looked alike to the new porters, who walked in circles past the linen store and the lift that never came. Mrs Okonedo, who had worked nights for thirty years, said the trick was to stop reading the signs and to look instead at where the sea would be.

One February a porter named Tomasz came up from the cellars with a stretcher and no idea which way the east wing lay. The power had dipped and the lights were low. Sister Alder put the compass in his palm, its needle trembling, and told him that a ship does not find harbour by staring at the rocks. It holds its heading, turns the wheel a spoke at a time, and lets the anchor do the rest once it is down.
He took the wrong stair twice. The third time he carried the stretcher through the swing doors with the needle steady, and found the old woman in bed four awake and asking for her husband, who had been dead for decades. Tomasz did not know what to say, so he sat on the hard chair and held her hand until the lamp outside the window turned pale over the car park.
When the morning shift came in, the compass was back in Sister Alder's pocket and nobody remembered who had lent it out. Tomasz still walks the wards by his own reckoning, one hand on the rail and his eyes on the thing that does not move.
