Compass rose tattoo on a shoulder
Blackwork · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A compass rose sits on the upper back over the shoulder blade, with eight bold black points around a ringed centre and a fleur-style north marker at the top. The circular frame and points are built from loose, sweeping black strokes and grey shading, with a few small reddish specks inside the dial. A small, thin black script word sits lower on the upper arm, and the photograph is taken indoors against a plain light wall.

The chart table had been wet since the squall off the Faroes, and I had given up trying to keep the pencil marks dry. Tomas stood at my shoulder with his cold coffee, tapping the brass dial of the old binnacle the way he did when he wanted me to stop and look at something. The needle sat where it always sat. North was north. Everything else was a guess with good manners.

I had brought the compass rose aboard in my sea chest, folded inside a Lloyd's register that my father had used as a bookmark for forty years. It was the only thing of his I could stand to look at. The points were hand-inked, bold as a forger's signature, and somewhere between Leith and Reykjavik the rain had blurred their edges until the whole rose looked like it was turning slowly in its frame, the way a dial does when you have been staring at it through the night.
We raised the Icelandic coast on the fourth morning, a grey smudge that became a row of black teeth and then, quite suddenly, a town. I unfolded the rose on the chart and set the dividers on the marker at the top, where a little curl of ink pointed to the north like an afterthought. Tomas asked me which way we were going. I told him the truth: home was wherever the needle stopped swinging, and that was usually somewhere you had already been.
