A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The hall still smells of floor polish and squash cordial, and somebody has pinned a photograph to the noticeboard by the fire door. Six boys in damp vests stand on the Skelmouth slipway, and at the end of the row Mr Pell holds a coil of rope over one shoulder like a yoke. You read the names printed underneath before you recognise your own.

Danny Oake comes across with a lanyard still round his neck and a paper cup going soft in his hand. 'He made us splice that eye every Tuesday,' he says, nodding at the photo. 'Said a rope you can't tie blind is a rope you'll drown with.' You remember the stiff hemp, the wet cotton smell of the boathouse, and the way Pell never raised his voice, only waited until your fingers stopped shaking.

Danny tells you the boathouse went under the bulldozers last spring, but the iron anchor from its doorway ended up with a scrap merchant in Whitby, and he paid forty pounds to get it back. It's in the boot of his car, in a feed sack, and you ask him why on earth he'd want it. He shrugs. 'Because it was the last thing that was ours.'

Before you go back in, you take a length of cord from your coat pocket and tie a bowline under the table, one-handed, the way he taught you. It sits tight and round, the loop holding firm, and for a moment the hall goes quiet enough to hear the sea a mile off, which you know is only the extractor fan in the kitchen.
