Navy anchor tattoo design
Colour · Flash
The image shows a single anchor motif drawn in navy ink on a plain white background. It has a ring at the top, a straight shank, a horizontal crossbar and curved flukes with pointed tips at each end. The linework is a consistent, moderately weighted outline with no shading, and the design is centred with generous white space around it.

Sit down there, mind the bean canes, they're not going anywhere. You want to know about the anchor under the rhubarb? My Stanley came home from the Atlantic convoys in nineteen forty-six with one sea boot, a tin of tobacco, and an iron anchor no bigger than my hand. He said it was the last thing the corvette let go of before she went down under him. He picked it off the Clyde slipway, or so he claimed, and I never once caught him in a lie about anything that mattered, only about fish.

He dug the bed the spring after, right where the sun comes round at noon. He set the anchor in the middle, ring up, like a flag on a grave, and planted runner beans round it so they'd climb the crossbar. Every July the beans went up the shank and wound themselves round the flukes, and he'd stand there with his pipe gone out, saying the sea had its hands in them now.
The turn came when the council wanted the allotments for a car park. Stanley went down with a spade at six in the morning and had the thing out of the ground before the men with the diggers turned up. Took him four hours, with his bare hands and a kitchen knife. He wrapped it in a feed sack and carried it home on his shoulder like a body.
He's gone now, and the beans still climb it every summer, and I'm the one who has to decide whether a thing can be let go of twice. So I've left it where it stands, ring up. When the wind comes off the back wall I swear I can hear the chain running out.
