Anchor with hibiscus and Ohana script
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A pencil drawing of a tattoo design showing a vertical anchor with a rope coiled around its shaft, two hibiscus flowers with leaves, and a curling vine at the top. The word Ohana is written in hand-lettered script across the lower curve of the anchor's arms. The image is greyscale with soft shading on the flowers and leaves and light hatching along the anchor.

Morwenna had the kettle on before the shift whistle, because her brother Jory always came up from the adit grey to the eyebrows and would not speak until he had tea in him. The cottage on the hill above Pednandrea smelled of wet slate and the paraffin lamp, and on the dresser sat the letter from Honolulu, folded three times around a flower pressed flat as a biscuit.

She had read it twice already. Their cousin Tamsin had gone out on a whaler from Hayle years back and never written, and now a man with a sunburnt hand had brought the letter up the lane saying a woman in a place called Hilo had asked him to find the Trewhella family. The word at the foot of the page was Ohana, which the man said meant nobody is left behind, and Morwenna turned it over the way she turned a lump of ore to see where the gleam was.
Jory came in with the dust still in his lashes and read the page standing, his cap crushed in one fist. He said nothing for a long while. Then he lifted the old iron anchor from its nail by the door, the one their grandfather had hauled out of the harbour mud, and set it on the table between the teapot and the lamp, as though it might be called upon to vouch for them.
"Tell her we're coming," he said. "Tell her the hill's a long way down, but we know the road."
Morwenna wrote the reply that night in pencil, because the ink had run dry, and pinned the pressed flower above the stove where the heat could keep it from curling.
