Gold floral design with leaves and swirls

Botanical · Colour · Flash

A gold metallic line drawing of a flowing floral design, with three five-petalled blossoms, pointed leaves and curling vine lines. Fine outlines and hatched detail give the leaves and petals texture, and small dots and teardrop shapes fill the gaps. The design is shown in a single metallic gold ink against a plain white background, arranged on a diagonal from top left to bottom right.

Dear Mam,

The sea has been flat since Lisbon and the galley is the only warm place on the Halcyon Dawn, so I am writing to you with the oven door open for the heat. Cook Odile would have a fit at the crumbs on the floor, but she is asleep in her bunk with her boots on, and I have the place to myself until the four o'clock bread.

You will not believe what I did on Tuesday. The third mate's wife packed a tin of gold leaf in her parcel at Lisbon, a silly present for a man who never touches sweets, and I found it wrapped in newspaper at the bottom of the spice locker. So I took the tin and my finest brush and decorated the captain's birthday cake the way you did the Christmas pudding, with vines running up the side. I started at the bottom corner with a curl like a fern unrolling, then a blossom with five petals, then another, then a leaf so thin you could read the racing results through it.

The captain came down to see what the fuss was. He stood in the doorway a long while saying nothing, which is how he says he is pleased. Then he asked if I would do the same on the chart room bulkhead, where the damp has got into the paint and the charts curl at the corners.

So I did. It takes only a few hours with a steady hand, and the roll of the ship helps, because the lines follow the swell without my meaning them to. I think of you every time I do the teardrops at the bottom. Keep the kettle on, and tell Dad the gold is not for his allotment shed. I will bring you home a tin of my own.

Love, Nell
