Anchor with palm tree island medallion
Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash
A line drawing of an anchor with a circular medallion across its shank. The medallion holds a rising sun, two palm trees, a horizon with water and clusters of foliage, framed by a ring of dots. The shading is built from stippling and dots, with hatching on the anchor's flukes, and the drawing is in black ink on a pale mint background.

Oswin Tallow had forged anchors in the harbour town of Marrowgate for thirty-one years and had never once been asked to put an island in one. The request came from a widow named Hesper Lind, who laid a folded sketch on his bench beside a tin of coins she had counted twice. It showed palms, a rising sun and a strip of sea. Her son had sailed on the Kestrel Vane for the Saltmere Reaches and had not written since the autumn.

Oswin said the ring would weaken the shank and that stock iron was too brittle for a medallion. Hesper said nothing. She only tapped the drawing with one finger until he gave in. He hammered the ring from a bar he had been saving for himself, punched the dots in with a nail set, and worked the sun into its hollow with a chisel no thicker than a straw. Each palm took him an evening. He stippled the sand until his thumb ached, and he left the foliage rough, the way leaves look from a deck at dusk.
When the anchor was done he wheeled it down to the quay and found the Kestrel Vane already moored, her crew hauling casks up the gangway. The mate looked at the medallion for a long time before he spoke. "Lind's boy drew that himself," he said. "Told us if the sea ever took him, he wanted a bit of sun to go down with." Oswin had not known the boy had asked for anything at all.
That night the mate fixed the anchor to the bow, and when the ship slipped her lines at dawn the chain ran out with a sound that carried across the water. Hesper stood at the top of the harbour steps with her shawl pulled tight. Oswin did not tell her what the mate had said. He only nodded, and she understood, and the two of them watched the sails shrink until they were one more small light on the grey sea.
