Mushrooms and Celtic knot design
Black and grey · Flash
A black outline drawing shows two spotted toadstool mushrooms stacked above a circular Celtic-style interlace knot. Thin leaves and curling tendrils extend from the lower edge of the circle. The linework is uniform and bold with no shading, and the composition is centred on a white background.

Dear Wenna, the bells at Carrow have stopped ringing since the frost, so I write by the stove instead, with the ink gone thick and my fingers no use. You will not believe what came up through the stone circle behind the mill overnight. Two toadstools, spotted like a bishop's mitre, stacked one on the other as if they were quarrelling over the top step, and beneath them the ground had gone into a knot.

I measured it with the good cord. Nine paces round, and the grass lay in a loop that crossed itself and crossed again, the way the weavers of Hallow Vale plait their bread rings. Where the loop ended, leaves had pushed up thin as a clerk's quills, and curling shoots ran out from them and turned back on themselves like the ends of a question. Master Anselm says it is only the damp. In forty years he has never once admitted the damp could draw a pattern.
Last night I went out with a lantern and sat in the middle of the loop for the length of a candle. Nothing happened, except that I noticed the knot had no beginning and no end, and that I had stopped minding whether I was cold. Then a spotted cap shifted an inch, the way a sleeper turns over, and I went back indoors and bolted the door.
Send word whether you still have the cart. I think the queen's surveyors will want to see this before the thaw, and I would rather they came with you than alone. Bring the cord. Bring salt for your pockets, because the old rhyme says the knot only lets go of those who count their steps out loud.
