Anchor with roses and flowers on ribs
Neo-trad · Ribs · Mixed · Photo
A grey-shaded anchor runs diagonally across the side of the torso, with a rope wound around its shank. Pink roses, an orange lily, yellow flowers and small blue blooms with green leaves cluster along the shank and flukes, with soft shading on the metal and petals. The bright floral colours stand out against the grey anchor and the pale skin, and the design fills the frame.

Dear Tom, The anchor came up in Mr Haskett's net on Tuesday, all green with weed and a loop of rope still knotted through the ring. Mother said it was Father's, the one he lost off the Skerries the winter before you were born, and nobody believed her until Haskett's boy scrubbed the shank with sand and found the initials. I have kept it in the back yard under a tarpaulin since, because the kitchen would not have it.

I did not know what to do with a thing that heavy and that sorry, so I went to Mrs Lowther's stall in the market and asked for whatever was going over. She gave me roses, pink as a bad sunburn, and a lily the colour of marmalade, and some yellow blooms she called frangipani though I doubt they grow anywhere colder than Madeira. I wound them along the stock. Tabitha from next door says it looks like a funeral and a wedding had an argument. I told her it looks like a boat that has decided to stay.
The little blue ones are forget-me-nots. I picked them from the ditch by the chapel wall, which is where you used to hide from Sunday school. I have not forgotten you, you great lump, so you needn't write to remind me.
The ship is due at the Sound on the eleventh. Come home by the lane, not the road, and mind the bottom step of the chapel stile. Your sister, Ada.
