Traditional anchor and flower on a foot

Traditional · Other · Mixed · Photo

A bold anchor with a dark grey shank and ring, crossed by a wooden-looking stock, sits at the centre of the design. A layered yellow and orange flower with a dark centre rests on the anchor, with red hearts or accents on either side and small swirl details. Thick black outlines and solid colour fills are used throughout, and the tattoo covers the top of a foot shown against a dark background.

Dear Mum, it's gone four and the ward has finally gone quiet enough that I can hear the lift hum from the far end. Mr Oduya in bed nine has stopped asking for his boots, which means he has stopped expecting to go home, so I sat with him for an hour while he talked about the trawler his cousin crewed out of Grimsby in 1971. He named every man on that boat, one after another, like a register read at roll call.

Ruth brought a flask round at two, the one with the dented cup, and said I looked like I'd been dragged up Spurn Head backwards. I told her about the lady in side room three who keeps asking where her wedding ring went. Ruth said it'll be in the drawer with the others, the ones nobody has come back for. We laughed the way you laugh at three in the morning, too long and not quite at anything.

I've been thinking about the old flash sheet Dad pinned above the kettle in the flat. Remember the anchor with the yellow flower sitting in the middle, the red hearts either side as if someone had argued for them? He said the flower was for you and the hearts were for the two of us, and the anchor was the bit he'd pay for because it's the bit that holds. I used to think that was a sailor's joke. Tonight it seems like the only sensible thing anyone ever told me about this job.

The porter is coming round with the mop, so I'll post this with the morning post. Tell Dad I'm doing fine, and that I haven't forgotten the hearts.
