Anchor wrapped in rope heart tattoo
Traditional · Other · Mixed · Photo
A bold anchor sits diagonally through a heart outline formed by a twisted rope, which loops around the anchor shank and knots at the lower point. The anchor and rope use heavy black outlines with grey shading and highlights, and the rope is filled with muted purple. The design is centred in the frame with plain skin around it.

The anchor has been down in the mud at Hollin Reach since the spring flood, and for three mornings you have stood at the capstan of the Mary Ellen hauling on a warp that will not give. Your uncle Dennis would have cut it loose and bought another by teatime. Dennis is in the churchyard at Shepperton now, and the anchor was his, and so is the length of rope he spliced into a heart the winter before he died, because he said a man ought to tie something soft to something hard and see which one holds.

Today you take the slack in your hands and feel the river's pull through the line. The engine ticks over behind you. Brown water slides past the hull, carrying branches, a plastic crate and a pink glove that keeps turning as if it is looking for someone. You work the warp side to side and let the tide do the lifting. Somewhere below the surface the iron shank shifts, and the knot at the bottom of the heart pulls taut with a sound like a held breath.
The anchor comes up with a bicycle frame wound in weed and nothing else. You laugh out loud, alone on the deck, because the Mary Ellen has not gone anywhere for a year. She has been waiting for you to admit that. You pick the shackle free, coil what is left of the rope, and walk forward to the bow.
You cut the warp at the bitts with Dennis's knife. The boat swings once, then drifts toward the bank where the willows lean, and the rope heart rides the current ahead of her, purple and patient, until the bend takes it out of sight.
