Anchor wrapped in a red rope heart on the leg

Traditional · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A grey shaded anchor sits diagonally across the centre of the image, with its shank and flukes rendered in smooth black and grey tones. Thick red rope curves around the anchor to form a heart outline, with small highlights on the rope twists and dark outlines throughout. The tattoo is shown on bare skin against a light background, with the design filling most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ferry was late again, so Maud Tregarthen sat on the platform bench at Penhallow Halt with a coil of red rope across her knees, working loose the knot her grandfather had tied the morning he sailed. The stationmaster had stopped telling her the trains ran the other way. He brought her tea in a chipped cup and set it on the slats beside her without a word.

Her grandfather had been a rigger on the Gull, a grey coaster that carried slate to Bristol and came home with coal. Each time he docked he unwound some scrap of rope from his shoulder and knotted it into a heart on the kitchen table, saying a sailor's knot was only a promise he could make with his hands. The anchor he kept in the shed was black with old tar and heavy as a sleeping dog. When the Gull went down in a February squall off the Lizard, the anchor was the only thing the sea gave back.

Maud had dragged it up the hill on a borrowed handcart, the rope looped round its shank in a red heart, meaning to send it inland on the London train so that someone far from the water might know what it had cost. But the clerk would not take it without a label, and she had only the name. So she sat with it, unpicking and retying, while the light went grey over the bay.

When the signal lamp flickered on, a man in a wet oilskin climbed the steps and stopped at the cart. He studied the heart for a long time. "Your grandfather tied that," he said. It was not a question. Maud nodded, and together they wheeled the anchor back down to the quay, where they laid it on the stones and let the rope fall open, the loose end lifting as the tide came in to read it.
