Black and grey realistic angel wings drawn as a tattoo design, with the words "That which does not kill me makes me stronger" running between them, on a white background.

Angel wings with quote script

Realism · Black and grey · Flash

A pair of feathered angel wings faces outward from a central vertical line of italic script reading "That which does not kill me makes me stronger". The feathers are built from fine stippled dots and layered shading, giving them volume and texture. The design is rendered only in black and grey on a plain white background, with the wings filling most of the frame.

The tar has already gone soft by the time you reach the cattle grid, and the wind off the flats carries grit that stings your eyes. Your father's pickup coughs twice, then quits a mile past the sign for Dry Creek. You walk the shoulder with a jerrycan in each hand, counting fence posts because counting is easier than thinking about how far it is to anywhere.

A lorry slows near the third bend. The driver is a woman with a sunburnt neck and a tin crucifix swinging from her mirror, and she leans across to ask whether you want a lift or a funeral. You laugh so hard you have to sit on the cab step. She drives you back to the pickup, and while the engine catches she tells you about her brother, who walked out into a dust storm in 1987 and came back with his hair gone white as salt. The road tried to keep him, she says, and he told it no.

You don't believe her, but you notice the mesa behind her has turned the colour of bleached bone in the dusk, its ridges stacked like feathers laid out to dry. At the turn-off you pull the old envelope from the glovebox, the one your father left there and you never opened. Inside is a single line in his slanted italic hand: That which does not kill me makes me stronger. You read it twice, then fold it back and drive on towards the lights.
