A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Okafor's hands were the only steady thing in the costume store at half eleven, and Dilys Mawby had stopped trying to match them. The pair of wings lay across two trestles under the work lamp, mirrored halves hinged on a wire spine that had snapped at the join. Someone had drawn them to be opened, not folded, and the feathers ran from the shoulder outwards like a sea breaking in two directions.

"Nobody tells you the bones are the easy bit," Mrs Okafor said, threading gold cord through a split quill. "It's the grading. Dark at the root, lighter at the tip, or they look like dusters."

Dilys worked the left wing while the city hummed through the loading bay. Sheffield at night smelled of wet brick and the chip shop on Snig Hill. Outside, a bus sighed at the stop and a gull walked the gutter like a man late for a train. She counted feathers the way her grandmother had counted stitches, under her breath, and lost her place at forty-one.

By two the join was sound. They lifted the frame between them and held it to the window so the sodium light came through the gap in the middle, pale and even, throwing two shadows onto the floor that did not quite touch. Mrs Okafor said the Christmas angel would not wear them until December. Dilys said nothing. She leaned the wings against the rail, open, and switched off the lamp so the streetlight could find its own way through.
