Antique world map tattoo across back and arms

Back · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows a person seen from behind, with a large antique world map tattooed across the back, shoulders and both upper arms. Two engraved hemispheres sit over the shoulders and shoulder blades, with continents, coastlines and fine cross-hatched shading across the skin. The tones are entirely black and grey, and the map fills the frame edge to edge against a soft grey backdrop.

Dear Tomasz, the plates came off the press on Tuesday and I have not slept properly since. Mr Hollis wants the western hemisphere recut before the Frankfurt fair, because the Dutch have pushed the Cape too far south and he says it makes us look like fools. So I sat up with the copper and a lamp, scraping the Atlantic back to bright metal while the rain came sideways off the river.

The market was the worst of it. Yesterday I walked to Billingsgate to buy ink from the widow Lazarus, and the whole square was a swamp of cabbage leaves and sacking. A boy sold me a rolled chart of the Indies for a penny, the paper soaked through, the rhumb lines running into one another like veins. I bought it anyway. Under the stall's awning he unrolled it and showed me that the coast of Brazil had been drawn with a thumb, smudged and blurred, and I laughed until he laughed too.

That is what I keep thinking about. Every line on a map is somebody's guess dressed up in the look of certainty. Hollis wants his guesses sharper than anyone else's, and I am the hand that makes them so.

I am bringing you the Cape plate when I come home at Michaelmas. Keep the kettle warm. If the rain ever stops, look up at the sky above Gravesend and tell me which way the wind has turned, because I have started to doubt my own compass.

Yours, Eli
