Antique world map tattoo across back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

A back and shoulders view of a person with the head cropped out, covered in a large tattoo of an antique world map with engraved continents, coastlines and latitude lines. The linework is fine and detailed, with soft shading that gives the map an aged, engraved look. The image is monochrome, and the tattoo fills the frame against a blurred map-like background.

Sit closer, the fire wants feeding and so do you. No, leave the peat alone and listen. On Scarrow, where the wind comes off the Atlantic with its teeth out, there was an engraver called Tobiah Crane who made charts for the ships that called at the harbour. He cut every coastline by hand, line by line, and in forty years he never drew a shore he had not first seen from a boat.

But there was one bay he could never get right. Each time he cut it, the water crept inward and the headland shifted a finger's width north, as if the land did not care to be pinned down. His wife, Maren, said the bay was fine and he was tired. He said the bay was lying.

So one March he rowed out alone with a pair of dividers, a horn lantern and a sheet of copper. He measured the latitude lines against the stars until his hands went blue. On the third night the sea lay flat as a pewter plate, and he saw the shore for what it truly was: a long pale line, and beyond it a second island, smaller, that no chart had ever shown. Tobiah laughed out loud and scratched it into the copper before dawn.

When he came home the bay was perfect, and nobody on Scarrow has ever found that second island. But Maren kept the copper plate on the mantel, and if you hold it to the candle you can still see a tiny compass rose pricked in one corner, pointing home.
