Arrow and feather on the upper chest

Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A small arrow runs diagonally across the upper chest, with its fletching at the upper left and its arrowhead pointing right. A shaded feather hangs beside the shaft, its barbs drawn with fine strokes and soft grey tones. The image is a close crop of bare skin and a black strapless top against a grey background, with the tattoo as the focal point.

Dear Wren, the snow has shut the pass again and I am writing this at the long table in the Coach and Horses at Scarrow Gap, with my boots steaming by the hearth and Mrs Ashdown glaring at me for dripping on her flags. You will want to know whether the arrows arrived. They did, all four dozen, though one bundle split on the last hill and I spent an hour on my knees in a ditch gathering shafts like a man picking up dropped matches.

The carrier who was meant to take them on to Hallam's Mill has gone home to his wife, so I am stuck here with the goods and a room under the eaves. Last night the landlord's boy came down from the loft with a grey wing he had found in the snow, barred black at the tips, and asked if I would show him how to bind the fletching. I cut him a length of ash, he stripped the feather with his thumbnail the way you taught me, and by candlelight he had three shafts that flew true off the sill into the drift. He was so pleased he forgot to be shy.

I have decided to keep one for myself. Father always said a feather keeps an arrow honest in a crosswind, and I think he was right, though I could never put it the way he did. I will bring it home in my coat pocket, wrapped in a bit of oilcloth so it does not bend. Tell Mother the pass should open by Thursday. If it does not, I will have learned to wait, which she says is the only useful skill a fletcher can have in winter.
