The jay feather you asked for is enclosed, though I had to pull it from the shaft I was fletching when your train pulled out. I finished the arrow anyway. Dad always said a half-done thing is worse than none, and I was not going to let him have the last word on that from wherever he is now.

Mr Hallam at the buffet says the 7.14 to Carlisle is late again, so you will have had time to watch the fells go grey from the window. I stood on the up platform until the lamps were lit, counting the carriages like a fool. Twelve. You would have laughed.

I have made the arrow for the fair on Saturday. Ash shaft, a head filed from an old horseshoe nail, and three feathers cut to a slant so it will spin true. The grey-barred one is the best of them. It looks like the feather off the bird on the signal box roof, the one that never flew off no matter how hard the wind came.

Keep the feather in your pocket, not your bag. When you are tired of the city, go and stand on a platform and let a train go past you. Then send word. I will know where to aim.
