Autumn maple leaves across a back

Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a cascade of maple leaves in red, orange, green, yellow and purple, falling diagonally from the upper back towards the hip, with a few small black ink splatters. The leaves are shaded with smooth gradients and fine veining, giving them depth. The photo shows a bare back with the head cropped out, so the ink is the clear focus of the frame.

The leaves came down the north stair of Carrow Keep the way they always did in October, one at a time at first, then in handfuls, rust and scarlet and a few stubborn greens refusing to let go. I had swept the inner ward for eleven autumns and never once got ahead of them.

The maple grew against the chapel wall, where Lady Isobel had planted it the spring her husband rode north. The estate ledgers in the steward's office are full of her small, careful hand. Pay the mason. Mend the postern. Ask the gardener if the sapling will survive the frost. Beside one entry there is a blot of ink where the pen jumped, as if the steward had been startled by something he could not bring himself to write down.

I found her last letter in the spring, folded inside the back cover of the ledger. She wrote that she would watch the tree turn, and that he would be home before the last leaf fell. He was not. The tree dropped its colour every year regardless, and she kept noting the dates in the margin until the margin ran out.

This morning one leaf was left, violet at the edges and curled like a hand, caught on the lowest stone of the stair. I stood over it with the broom for a long time. Then I leaned the broom against the wall and let the wind take it, down past the arrow slit and out over the moat, where it turned once on the black water before it settled.
