Autumn maple leaves on a lower leg

Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows several maple leaves in orange, red and brown tones, spiralling down the lower leg towards the ankle. Among the leaves are what appear to be yellow eyes, possibly belonging to an animal hidden in the foliage. The shading is soft and realistic, with highlights and darker veins giving the leaves depth, set against freckled skin on a carpeted floor.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fox arrives at the crossing in late October, when the maples on both banks have turned and the wind is pulling their leaves into the road faster than the sweepers can clear them. You are the one in the booth, with the stamp and the ledger, and it sits on the counter as though it has every right to be there. Its papers are a single curled leaf, pressed flat, with a date inked along the stem in handwriting that has run in the damp.

You ask where it is going. It says the orchard on the far side, where it buried acorns last spring and has come back to dig them up. You ask what it is carrying, and it looks at the leaf on the counter and then at you, and its eyes are the colour of old brass in the lamplight. It says the leaves always come with it. Every crossing, one more goes over the water, and the trees on your side grow a little barer for it.

You open the ledger to check the entries from previous years, because that is what the ledger is for. Your own handwriting is there in the margins, dated in the autumns you cannot quite remember working. Beside each one is a small pressed leaf, stuck down with tape gone yellow.

When you look up the booth is empty except for the stamp, and on your cuff there is a single orange leaf, warm as if it had just fallen, and in the rustle of the car park something blinks.
