Autumn maple leaf on a lower leg
Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo
A single maple leaf with its stem is shown in the centre of the frame, drawn with fine dark outlines and vein lines. The leaf is shaded with smooth gradients that move from yellow at the centre to deep orange and red at the edges, giving it a three-dimensional look. It sits on pale skin with visible pores, and the background is a plain, soft-focus light surface.

Sit closer, the fire's gone low and I'll not shout this one. You want to know why Mrs Pargeter never pulled the old sugar maple at the bottom of her garden, even after its roots lifted the flagstones and the council man came round with his clipboard. Her husband planted it the spring their first boy was born, and he swore it would turn the colour of a fox every autumn that the boy was alive to see it.

Mind, it didn't always keep its word. The year the boy went off to sea, the leaves came down green in August and nobody thought to be surprised. But the next autumn it caught fire again, the yellow running out from the middle of each leaf like butter in a hot pan, the orange and red creeping in from the edges until the whole crown looked like a kitchen lamp someone had forgotten to dim. Mrs Pargeter stood under it with her apron full of windfalls and said, well, he's coming home, then, and went in to put the kettle on.
He did come home, though not the way anyone pictured. He came up the lane in a borrowed coat with his cap in his hands and a single leaf stuck to his collar. He said he'd picked it off on the way past because the tree looked like it was waving at him. She laughed until she had to sit on the step. That leaf, pressed flat in the family Bible, is why the maple stays.
