Back and arm tattoos at a beach wedding
Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman in a white lace, backless wedding dress stands on a sandy beach with her back to the camera, holding a white bouquet. Large dark tattoos cover her upper back and arm, with the design partly obscured by her pose. The image is shot in warm, soft daylight, and two other people holding white bouquets appear at the edges of the frame.

The tide had turned before Ida Penhale got the lace down the cliff steps, and she was still picking sand out of the hem when the first bouquets came over the rocks. Ten white heads of ranunculus, tied with wet string, and the florist swearing softly because the spray kept knocking petals loose. Nobody on Porth Cadan had ever married on the sand before. Ida said it was because everyone was too frightened of the gulls.

The dress had come from her grandmother's trunk, a sheath of lace the colour of sea-foam, cut for a woman who left the parish in 1961 and never wrote. Ida had re-stitched the seams three times. At every fitting she found another small hole where the moths had been, and each time she mended it with thread the shade of the cliff grass. The bride laughed at the fuss and said the back was the part she cared about, so Ida had left it open, a long pale curve like the shoreline below the lifeboat house.
At the edge of the shingle, a cousin held the train clear of the wrack while two bridesmaids balanced their flowers against the wind. Ida watched their feet leave prints in the wet sand, and then the wash came in and smoothed every one of them flat, as if nobody had ever stood there at all.
She pocketed the spare pearl button, picked up her shears, and walked home along the top of the sea wall. Behind her the bouquets still glowed on the beach, and the tide, which keeps its own accounts, had already started on the footprints.
