Woman with rose and tattooed arm in white lace
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman with long dark wavy hair holds a pale pink rose in front of her face, wearing a white lace bralette and lace skirt. Black and grey tattoos cover her forearm and extend over her upper arm and shoulder, with ornamental shading and fine detail visible. The soft, warm-toned light and plain pale wall keep the focus on the figure and the ink.

The pricking needle had gone blunt by the third rose, and Mrs Hallam would not hear of a new one until quarter day. So Ada worked the old point through the card with her thumb braced against its eye, turning each hole to follow the petal the way her father had shown her, counting under her breath so the spacing would hold.

The mill sent its designs up the hill in boxes tied with string, and most of them were scrolls, acanthus and tendril, leaves that curled back on themselves until the eye lost the stem. Ada liked them well enough. But the rose had been her father's private joke. He had drawn it on the inside of his cuff the summer before the frames came in, a rose with one leaf turned over like a page, and he had said a lace ground ought to hold one thing nobody had asked for.
When the men came up the Lace Market to see whether the work was done, she held the card to the gas lamp. Light came through every pricked hole at once, and the rose stood out on the plaster wall in pale dots, leaves and all, trembling slightly where her hand trembled. Mrs Hallam squinted at it and said it would never sell. Ada let her say it. Then she hung the card in the window, and by Monday a woman from Derby had asked who had made it.
