Ball of yarn with knitting needles on a forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A ball of olive-green yarn sits on the forearm with two orange knitting needles pushed into it, their round ends poking out at the top. A single green strand of yarn unspools from the ball and winds in a wavy line down towards the wrist. The linework is dark and outlined, with shading on the yarn that gives the ball its texture, and the plain skin tone of the arm sits behind the design.

Dear Ruth,

The snow closed the Hardcastle road on Tuesday, so I have had three days in the hut with nothing to do but count the stitches on Dad's jumper and listen to the stove tick. Mrs Pryce brought up a sack of coal on the mule and said the carrier would not be through before Thursday, if he came at all. I told her I would keep the kettle on regardless.

You will laugh, but I have unravelled the grey wool twice already. The first time I went at it because the cuffs were wrong, the second because I could not stand sitting still. The ball sits on the chair beside me with the two needles stuck through it like the poles of a tent, and the loose end runs out of the door and down the path, the way you used to run the string from your kite across the back field. I followed it out this morning in my boots. It goes down the switchbacks past the cairn where we buried the Moss boy, and it is still going when the fog takes it.

I think I will finish the jumper for him anyway. If he comes over the top in February he will be cold, and I do not care whether he thanks me.

Keep the lamp lit at the bottom window. I will count the days by the knots.

Love, Nell
