Dear Morag, the frost came in on Tuesday and took the last of the top field, so I have been pulling what survived before it goes soft. The carrots are small this year, but the ones along the south wall came up purple at the shoulders and I have kept them back for you. Don't let Ruairidh tell you they're for the hens.

The ferry only runs three days a week now, and the man at the quay will not take anything without a tag on it, so I have been tying them in threes with the twine from the old fish boxes. Father always said three was the honest number for a bunch, one to show, one to share, one to fork into something no one would eat. I thought he was joking until the spring he died, when I found his knife wrapped in a bunch of the same string in the dresser drawer, the stems tied so neatly I could not get the knot undone without cutting it.

Last night I sat up with the lamp and tied a bunch for myself. The roots had grown in a tangle, two of them crossed like arms, and the feathery tops had gone lacy from the cold, almost as if the frost had drawn them. I wrapped the string round twice and pulled it tight, and then I couldn't bring myself to cut the loop, so it's still on the table, string and all.

Come at Easter if the boat allows. Bring your own twine. There is a spare pair of boots by the door that were his, and I have stopped pretending I will give them away.
