Traditional-style chest tattoo of a crest with a Dropkick Murphys banner, a red-eyed skull, a shield holding a red rose, and a Signed and Sealed in Blood scroll.

Band crest with skull and rose on chest

Traditional · Chest · Mixed · Photo

A large crest tattoo sits on a person's chest, with a banner reading DROPKICK MURPHYS above a skull with red eyes and a shield at the centre. The shield holds a red rose with green leaves and a radiating background, framed by rope-like borders and a scroll reading SIGNED AND SEALED IN BLOOD. The linework is bold and black, with grey shading giving depth, and the rose is the only strong colour.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The gardener's boy had dug under the old wall for three days before the spade rang against iron. Mrs Hallam came down the gravel path with her apron still tied and told him to leave it be. He had already scraped the clay from a shield no bigger than a dinner plate, its rim worked with rope-twist, and at its centre sat a red rose with leaves of green enamel, its petals flaking like old wax.

"That's the Ashgrove rose," she said, not looking at him. Her grandmother had told her how the first lord of the house was promised a garden that never failed, provided he set his name to the bargain. The stranger at the gate leaned on a staff topped with a skull and asked for nothing else, only a mark in blood. The lord pricked his thumb on a rose thorn and pressed it to the parchment beneath a scroll that read SIGNED AND SEALED IN BLOOD. Every June the roses came, and every June the house grew a little quieter.

The boy did not believe a word of it. He carried the shield to the kitchen table and rubbed it with vinegar until the rose shone, and the skull above it grinned back at him with two red eyes. That night he cut his palm on the spade's edge while burying the scraps, and by morning the blood had dried in a neat brown ring on the windowsill beside the shield.

Mrs Hallam found him kneeling in the bed, drawing a line of thorns in the soil with one finger. "What did you sign?" she asked. He held up his hand, and the cut across his palm had closed pale and straight, like the stroke of a letter. "Nothing yet," he said. "But I know where I'll put my name."
