A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sean Dolan had the bet written on a beer mat before the kettle boiled, and he was still grinning when Mairéad walked out of the Ballyvaughan bar with a torch and a paper bag. Four leaves, he said. You'll not find one in the whole of the Burren if you walk till Michaelmas. She took the wager for a pound and a sprig of rosemary and went up onto the limestone pavement where the wind had scoured the grey stone clean.

She found three-leaved shamrocks by the hundred. They crowded the cracks in the rock like small green fists, each one blameless and ordinary, and by the third hour her knees were wet and her torch had dimmed to a sulk. A fox watched her from a wall and then lost interest. She was about to give up when the light slanted low across a patch of moss and she saw it: a clover whose one leaf had split and sprouted a second, and a third, and then a fourth, each one sheened with teal and gold where the sun caught the damp.

She carried it down the lane as if it were an egg. Sean took one look, cursed, and pushed his pound across the bar. Mairéad bought him a half and left the leaf pressed flat under the beer mat. Above them the painted banner over the hearth still read LUCK OF THE IRISH in striped green letters, and the L had been missing a bit of paint since before either of them was born, which everyone agreed was the closest thing the village had to a miracle.
