Bare tree across an upper arm

Botanical · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A large bare tree with twisting black branches fills the upper arm and reaches onto the shoulder. Bold solid black linework forms the trunk and main limbs, while finer branches fade into soft grey shading that suggests a misty sky and a distant horizon of trees. The tattoo is in black and grey only, and the composition wraps around the arm with the trunk running down the outer side.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ferry had not run since October, so Marta walked the causeway at low tide with a torch she did not need yet. Mist sat on the flats like wet wool. Somewhere out past the saltmarsh a single oak stood where the old chapel had been, its branches black against a sky the colour of pewter, and the village had a rule about it that nobody would explain to a stranger.

Her grandmother had told her the rule when she was small. Never count the branches. Never touch the bark. If you wake and the tree is closer to the window than it was at dusk, pack a bag and go before the tide turns. Marta had laughed then. She did not laugh now, with the wind pulling the mist into long grey ropes between the trunks and the tree's crown splitting the dark into a hundred forking paths.

She found the chapel stones, half drowned in bracken, and the oak grew out of them like a hand from a grave. Its roots had lifted the floor. Its trunk was as wide as a cart, and where the bark had split she saw a door, low and iron-banded, already open an inch. She had come to fetch her grandmother's ring, which had been buried with her at the foot of that trunk, and she had told herself a ring was only metal.

She knelt in the wet grass and began to dig with her hands. Above her the branches shifted, though there was no wind left, and she heard them knock softly together like a room full of bones. Her fingers found the cold band. She did not count the branches. She did not look up. She simply stood, the ring tight in her fist, and walked back toward the village lights without once turning round.
