Weeping willow tree tattoo in black and grey

Realism · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A large weeping willow tree fills the frame, with a thick, twisting trunk curving up into branches that hang down in fine, trailing strands. The linework is bold along the trunk and main branches, while the foliage uses soft, layered grey shading to create depth. The tree is set against a pale background of skin, with the trunk sweeping from the bottom left to the right edge.

Dear Ruth, the rain has been coming down on Hallam Row since six, so the awning over the willow stall sags like a wet sheet and I've had to tip the pooled water off it every hour with the broom handle. Mr Okafor from the bike shop bought two bundles of whips for his car park. I told him they'd take twenty years to do him any good, and he laughed and said he had twenty years.

The big one I've been keeping back is the cutting Dad bent over the fence the summer before he went. Its trunk has a kink in it like a bad elbow, and the strands hang so low now they brush the bucket of water beside it. I wouldn't sell it at any price. Everyone who comes to the stall asks why it's so crooked, and I tell them it grew that way because it spent its first season leaning into the wind to keep its roots out of the gutter.

This morning a woman in a green mac stood under the awning for an hour with her umbrella folded across her knees. She didn't buy anything. She just watched the drips come off the ends of the strands, one at a time, and once she said, very quietly, that her mother used to sit under a tree just like that. Then she thanked me and walked off into the wet without opening the umbrella.

So on Sunday I'm taking the crooked one down to the canal path and putting it in the bank where the water can reach it. Come with me. Bring the spade you never gave back.
