Bare tree in a dotted circle on a thigh
Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A bare tree with thin, branching limbs and a stippled canopy sits at the centre of a dotted circle that partly frames it. The tree trunk and branches are drawn in crisp black fine lines, while the foliage area is built from dense dots that fade toward the edges. The design is entirely in black and grey ink and sits centrally on the thigh, with the top of a denim garment visible above it against a plain grey background.

Sit nearer, the fire's better than my voice for warmth. You want the old ash at Tollbridge, the one behind the Mercy Hall. My grandmother said it had never once been in leaf in November, not even the year they built the hall around it. Tom Lusk marked its ground with a length of string and a nail, a circle wide enough for a ring of dancers, and he pricked the outline into the frost one dot at a time so the parish would know where the floor ended and the sky began.

The hall ran its Saturday dances for forty winters. Bands came up from the coast in lorries that rattled the windows. Every dancer who stepped out for air stood under those bare branches and told the tree something they had not yet told their mother. Ada Lusk, who swept the boards and kept the tally book, swore the limbs creaked in time with the fiddles. She wrote down who said what in the margins, and the margins filled up.
When Tom died the hall went quiet, and Ada locked the doors for a whole spring. In April she came out with a tin of ink and a bone-handled pen. She knelt under the ash and dotted the air above its limbs, thick at the top and thinning toward the edges, until a crowd of tiny marks hung there like breath on a cold morning. 'There,' she said to nobody. 'Now it has leaves for the ones that never came back.'
On the first warm Saturday the fiddles started up again, and the dancers found their way around the circle without anyone telling them where it was.
