Tree with a swing on a lower leg
Dotwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A small tree with a stippled, dotwork canopy sits above a fine line trunk and branches, with a simple swing hanging from one lower branch. The shading is built from dots in the leaves and crown, while the trunk and branches use thin, crisp lines. The tattoo is in black and grey ink on pale skin, centred against a dark, out-of-focus background.

Dear Tom, the oak has gone and nobody told me until Mrs Pardoe came up the lane with a clipboard and her opinions about the parish council. They took the chainsaws to the big one by the stile on Tuesday, so you'll have to take my word that the swing is still there, or was, because I went down this morning to check and the rope had been cut clean at the bough. The seat was lying in the nettles like something dropped in a hurry.

I sat on the stile for a while with the dog. The stump is the colour of wet bread and the rings are so close together near the middle that I tried counting them and lost my place twice. Dad hung that seat the summer you were born, on a rope he'd bought from the chandlers in Maldon, and I used to think the tree was holding us up rather than the other way round.
Anyway. I've kept the seat. It's in the boot of the Corsa under a tarp. I'm not sure what I'll do with it, though I've been thinking of a planter for the back step, or a frame for the kitchen window, something that proves it was once a thing that sent a child swinging high enough to see the church spire over the hedge.
Write back. Tell me if you remember which branch Dad lashed the knot to, because I've decided I want it in the right place somewhere, even if it's only in the garden.
