Bare tree tattoo on lower back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A single bare tree is tattooed in solid black ink on the lower back, with a trunk at the bottom centre and branches spreading upwards and outwards. The branches are drawn with fine, tapering lines and the crown is dense and open, giving a silhouette effect. The photograph is taken from behind, showing the tattoo against pale skin, with a striped top and long hair in the upper frame.

Your grandfather called it the tally tree, because every winter he counted its limbs to tell us how the year would go.

The men from the water board wanted it down in October. They said the roots were lifting the drain. I went out with the ledger and sat under it for an afternoon with a flask of tea, and I drew it as near as I could in pencil on the back of the rates letter. Eleven hundred and four twigs, if you count the ones too small to hold a wren. I counted twice and got a different number the second time, which I have decided to believe.

Mr Pryce came back on Thursday with his clipboard and stood where I had stood. He looked up for a long while, then wrote something, tore the sheet off and folded it into his coat. I asked him what it said. He said the drain could go round the tree, and that it was not his place to take down something that had been holding up the sky that long.

The tree is still there. Come at Easter and bring the good pencils, and we will count again, and you can tell me which number you believe.
