Bare tree tattoo on the nape of the neck

Botanical · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows a small silhouette of a leafless tree with a short trunk and thin, spreading branches, inked on the upper back at the base of the neck. The ink is solid black with no shading, and the fine branch tips stand out against pale skin. The tree sits centrally below hair gathered into an elastic band, with a grey knitted top visible at the shoulders and a softly blurred background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Ada Pell had ordered the pear tree felled in November, and by February the job still hadn't been done. Tomasz stood on the frosted lawn of the walled garden with the saw resting against his shoulder and didn't lift it. The tree looked like something drawn in ink on the grey morning, every branch thinning out to a fine point, the trunk short and stubborn in the cold. Rooks were already arguing in the top twigs.

"My husband planted it the year we married," Ada said from the back step, wrapped in her coat. "It has given nothing for six springs. I'd like the wall back for the beans." She didn't say it unkindly, and Tomasz nodded as if he understood, though he couldn't yet see why a tree should be judged by its fruit alone.

He sat on the low wall with his flask and watched the branches for the rest of the afternoon. The light moved across them slowly, the rooks left one by one, and the shadows of the twigs stretched over the path like a net someone had dropped there and forgotten. He thought about his own father's apple trees back home, sold off when the land was split, and how nobody had asked the trees anything.

In March he came back with the saw still in the van. There was a single white blossom at the tip of the lowest branch, small and certain, and Ada was standing under it with two cups of tea, her breath clouding in the thin sun. She held one out to him and said nothing about the beans. The saw stayed where he had leaned it, against the wall, and nobody moved it.
