Bearded sailor and ship in bottle design
Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash
A detailed drawing of a tattoo design on tracing paper, showing a bearded man in a helmet with a ship in a bottle held in one hand. Dense etched linework and stippled shading build up the face, beard and helmet, with smoke-like wisps and a smaller ship in the bottle. Two flowers with dotted centres and leaves fill the lower corners, and the composition runs vertically down the sheet.

Your father's hands were never still, even at the table, and the bottle on the windowsill was the only thing in the house he let you touch without a rag first. Inside it the ship stood on its painted sea, three masts raked, a tiny flag no bigger than a fingernail. He had built it through a whole winter by lamplight, threading cotton through a gap no wider than a pencil, while the pit whistle sounded below the hill at changeover.

Nobody in Hollin Bank had seen the sea. The nearest water was a flooded quarry where boys dared each other to swim in January. Your father knew the names of every rope, though, and he taught you them on the back step: halyard, sheet, bowline. He said a sailor was just a man who trusted a thing he could not see to hold him up.
The summer the seam flooded, the colliery shut for eleven weeks and the men sat in the Miners' Welfare playing dominoes they no longer needed to pay for. Your father took the bottle down to the quarry edge one evening and held it up against the sky. You watched his face, lined and grey with coal dust that no amount of scrubbing lifted, and waited for him to smash it on the stones.
He didn't. He pulled the cork, laid the ship on its side, and said, 'Right. Now we'll see if it floats.' It did not, of course. Nothing so small could. But the water took the little hull gently and carried it out past the reeds, and you both stood there until the flag was gone.
