Howling wolf and rose flash design

Black and grey · Flash

A pencil or ink line drawing on paper showing a howling wolf with its head raised, resting above a large open rose with leaves. The wolf has shaded fur detail, while the rose and leaves are outlined with clean lines. An ornate scrolled frame with diamond patterning and a row of beads encloses the design, which is centred on the page.

The van gives up forty miles past the last filling station, and by the time you have walked back to the bleached sign that once read Sabine Flat, the sun has sunk to a rust-coloured coin behind the ridge. Your sister's pressed rose is still tucked inside the back cover of the road atlas on the passenger seat, where she left it the summer she moved north, its petals gone thin as tissue.

Somewhere past the cattle grid, a wolf starts to sing. It is not a dog, and you know the difference. The note climbs slowly, like someone going up a stair in a house with no roof, and it rolls out over the scrub until the dust itself seems to hold still and listen. You cough to prove you are a person and not a fencepost. The wolf answers with a longer note, and you realise it is calling to something that has not yet replied.

You think of the old mirror in your mother's hallway, the scrolled frame with its diamonds and its ring of little beads, and how she used to say the glass was a window cut to fit the wrong wall. The shape comes down off the shelf of rock with its nose lifted to the first stars, grey as the road, and it does not come closer. You sit on the warm bonnet and sing back, badly, the way you sang with your sister in the car.

A lorry driver finds you at dawn, asleep with the atlas open on your knees. Beside the tyre tracks runs a line of prints that loops out and back across the sand, never quite leaving, as if the wolf had only wanted company for the length of the road.
