Bearded sailor with ship and roses on a calf

Neo-trad · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A bearded man in profile smokes a pipe, with a small anchor marked on his cheek, and his quiffed hair rises into curling smoke. Below him sits a red-sailed ship among waves, with large orange roses and a lighthouse to the right. Bold outlines and solid colour fills sit against soft shading on the face and beard, shown across three side-by-side views of the same leg.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lamp at Scarrow Point had been dark three nights when Ada Penhallow came down the shingle with a bucket of oil and found Joss Harrow sitting on an upturned coble, his pipe cold in his teeth, watching the Marigold Rose beat out past the bar with her red sails full. He had the look of a man who had already decided something and was only waiting for the weather to agree.

"She'll not come back for you," Ada said. "Nor for the lamp." Joss took the pipe out and turned it over in his fingers. Inside the lid of his tobacco tin someone had pressed a single orange rose, the kind his mother grew against the chapel wall, and he had carried that tin to sea and back for thirty years. "Her crew are my brothers," he said. "Somebody has to light the way for them, even if I'm no use at anything else."

The storm came in before dusk and Joss climbed the tower anyway, trimming the wick with his clasp knife while the spray hissed against the glass. Ada watched from the cliff path with her shawl pulled tight. When the red sails showed in the gap near midnight, the beam swept across them once, twice, steady as a pulse, and she knew the keeper had not gone down with his oil.

By morning the Marigold was riding safe at the quay. Ada found the tin on the lamp-room sill, its lid rusted open, the rose gone the colour of old pennies. Scratched beside it with a nail was a small anchor, and beneath that, in careful capitals, the words HELD.
